Department of Indian Sign Language

Department of Indian Sign language started in the year 2015 at School of Behavioural Sciences. PG Diploma course in Indian Sign language is offered by the department as regular and part time mode. Orientation programmes and refresher courses in Indian sign language are also conducted by the department.

Indian sign language course offered by mahatma Gandhi University in collaboration with Ali Yavar Jung national institute for the speech and hearing disability (AYJNISHD) as per the regulations of Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Now RCI has entrusted ISLRTC, New Delhi to monitor the Diploma course in Sign Language. As with any language spoken or sign, the people best able to teach the language are the native users of the language. Therefore the Indian sign language (ISL) course will be taught entirely by teachers with hearing impairment. It is hoped that trainees will enjoy the course and do more courses with us in the future, so that they can become sign language trainer or even interpreter for people with hearing impairment.

Sign Language is the mother tongue of person with Hearing Impairment. Sign languages are unique in some ways in that they cannot be written like written English or Hindi. Therefore this course has been designed in such a way that the learners can study audio – visually i.e. via video terminals, computers and by practicing with each other and people with hearing impairment. Learning a language involves much more than merely learning vocabulary. The grammar and flavour of the language can only be acquired through exposure to the use of the language. PGDISL programme give emphasis on practical aspects including community based communication and Rehabilitation.
